The Evolution of Materials in Table Tennis

Table tennis emerged in the late 19th century as an indoor game. Early rackets were made of bare wood, while balls were initially produced from rubber and later from celluloid.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the introduction of rubber coverings made the game more controlled and technical. From the 1950s onward, the development of sponge rubbers laid the foundation for modern table tennis, emphasizing speed and spin.

Racket blades gradually evolved from single-ply wood to multi-ply constructions, and later to carbon and other composite materials. Handle shapes and blade geometries diversified in response to different grip styles and ergonomic requirements.

In 2000, the ball diameter was increased from 38 mm to 40 mm; in 2014, celluloid balls were replaced by plastic ones. These changes reshaped the pace of the game and the dynamics of play.

Today, table tennis equipment continues to evolve based on material science and player biomechanics.
